Shirley Jacksons short story The Lottery is a tale basically about a small town and the people who lived there had to participate in the yearly lottery. This yearly lottery were not like normal lotteries, no one did not want to win. At the beginning of the story it did not say what type of prize you will win, but they did reveal the prize at the end. Each year the families gathers together and they are required to draw a paper from a black box. The family who wins the winning paper has to put their paper back into the black box and draw again. The family who draws the paper with the dot wins the lottery. They do not say what the winning family member receive until the end, and the prize was to get put to death! Jackson’s setting for†¦show more content†¦Even though they did not make it specific who were the main characters of the story, I later read about Tessie Hutchinson and she ended up being the active character of the story. Throughout the story she finds out about her Husband, Bill Hutchinson , who is the winner of the the lottery. Tessie was very upset about it and started to complain about Bill did not have enough time to pick a slip. Bill started to get frustrated with Tessie so he tells her to shut up and they continue to explain about the lottery. Tessie always thought that the lottery was all fun and games until they started telling them what the winner will receive. The reader will later learn about the the two conflicts, internal and external at the end of the story. The author begins the setting up the conflict at the beginning of the story. The narrator talks about the kids playing the square and standing around making jokes. Later when the lottery starts is when we learn there will be violence taking place. Externally, once Tessie is declared the winner she starts to get all worried and wants them to do the lottery all over again so another person can be declared. Internally, she finds out that the lottery is not what she was peer pressured to believe. Gregorian chants were monophonic in nature and were used by the Catholic Church to add an otherworldly quality to the mass. â€Å"Chant survived and prospered in monasteries and religious centers throughout the chaotic years of the early middle ages, for these were the places of greatest stability and literacy† (Medieval Music). Gregorian chant was the only type of music that was generally accepted by the church. All instrumental musical pieces were rejected by the church because of its idea that they were more secular in nature.
